Basically the second THRESHER - class nuclear-powered attack submarine, the PERMIT became the lead ship and namesake of her class after the loss of USS THRESHER (SSN 593) on April 10, 1963. Named after the fish, the USS PERMIT was the second ship in the Navy to bear the name. Both decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on July 23, 1991, the PERMIT entered the Navy's Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash., on September 30, 1991. Recycling was completed on May 20, 1993. General Characteristics:
