Chief Baker replaced Chief Blair as the head of E-Div somewhere around 1969. We got along like cats and dogs.....at least I thought. I was a short timer, he was a lifer. But he always treated me fairly. And in spite of the grief I had given him during the time I worked for him, when I was headed to Treasure Island for separation, he told me to look up one of his buddies at Mare Island and he'd make sure I had transportation and make sure everything went smoothly. That impressed me. I think that is what leadership is about. So I was very sad to hear of his death in 1972 during the yard period.
